Jeremy Bernier
About Me
Hello! My name is Jeremy Bernier. I am a PhD student in the Learning, Literacies, and Technologies program at Arizona State University's Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College. As an academic, my current motivating question behind much of my work is:
How can we foster a playful approach to mathematical problem solving among learners, and can a playful approach support learners' ability to problem solve in mathematics and beyond?
I was born and raised in the state of Maine, a little bit all over but mostly in the Lewiston / Auburn area. For my undergraduate studies, I went to Boston University and earned my BS in Mathematics Education in 2015. I spent a year after undergrad working at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida, before teaching pre-algebra at Maine Connections Academy, Maine's first all-online charter school. I earned an MS in Teaching with a concentration in Mathematics from the University of Maine in 2020, just before enrolling at ASU.
My dissertation committee is chaired by Dr. Elisabeth Gee, who is an Associate Dean at the Teachers College and is also the Delbert & Jewell Lewis Chair in Reading & Literacy. Also on my committee are Dr. Michelle Zandieh, Dr. Brian Nelson, and Dr. Naneh Apkarian. You can review my CV to see a complete list of scholars I have had the fortune to work with.
Throughout all of my life, I have pretty consistently been a gamer - at least as much as finances and time allowed. Most of my playtime is in single-player roleplaying games and in Nintendo-published titles, but I dabble in a little bit of everything. My favorite video games are Fallout: New Vegas and Undertale.
Outside of all that, I am also a member of the board of directors of the Memorial Scout Camp, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote wilderness camping experiences, support the worldwide scouting movement, and sponsor community service. I have served as the Vice Chairman of the organization since the board of directors was established in 2010.
